Variable Flow Refrigerant Systems

Variable Flow Refrigerant (VFR) Systems are an excellent choice for buildings that require both heating and cooling to coexist simultaneously. VFR systems have the ability to regulate the flow of refrigerant to various indoor units so that one location can stay cool while the other remains warm. This type of system runs from a single outdoor condensing unit or heat pump along with variable speed compressors, drives, and inverter-driven fans. Oftentimes, heat recovery systems are employed to offer additional energy conservation and savings.

VFR systems are an excellent choice for small to medium-sized apartment buildings where individual temperature control is a must. They can also be utilized for high-rise buildings with different levels of exposure and usage. Additionally, we may recommend VFR for locations where heating and cooling would occur separately in adjacent spaces. Historic buildings or older facilities may also opt for VFR, because it is less invasive to install the piping compared to alternative solutions. Because outdoor ventilation is essential to meet code compliance, buildings with windows that can be opened or natural ventilation also make excellent VFR locations.

A VFR solution can offer a significant cost savings. The team at AC&R will discuss your particular facility and needs in order to recommend if a VRF is your ideal solution.
