The Heat Is On, Isn’t it? Are You Prepared for Those Winter HVAC Problems?

That’s right, Winter is here– which means the weather is about to get more severe in northeastern Pennsylvania. And as homeowners can testify, cold weather and plunging temperatures can frequently result in HVAC problems. But fear not! Our trained HVAC technicians at AC&R Services have assembled the most common HVAC issues our customers have confronted over the years. And they’re sharing tips on how to cope with them when they do take place.

Okay, let’s look at the most common HVAC winter problems.

Thermostat issues

From an out-of-date thermostat to faulty wiring, thermostat problems often weigh in near the top of common HVAC issues in the winter. Certain symptoms that you might be dealing with a deteriorating thermostat include:

  • Erratic temperature changes
  • Persistent thermostat issues after changing the batteries
  • Furnace won’t turn on or off automatically
  • Thermostat has no power, display window is blank or dark

Thermostats are complicated and it’s difficult to know everything about them. However, the most essential thing to know is your thermostat’s age. The older, the more apt you’ll experience problems.

The typical lifespan for an HVAC thermostat is around ten years, with their accuracy coming into question around the 7- to 8-year mark. While thermostats don’t use any moving parts, their assorted sensors, switches and wiring are all prone to age-related failures.

The good news is that if you must replace your current thermostat, you can upgrade to a programmable or smart model that will address airflow problems as well as boost energy efficiency and save you money. Simply contact the professionals at AC&R Services about upgrading your thermostat.

Dirty air filers

Not to be redundant, but a dirty air filter can cause your home to feel nippy and uncomfortable. As we’ve mentioned in past blogs, air filters need to be routinely checked and replaced to enable the efficient flow of air into and from your furnace. Besides, consistent air filter changes help improve energy efficiency and lessen wear and tear on your HVAC system.

Flickering pilot lights

Pilot lights can flicker and stop working for two basic reasons. First, drafts are the principal reason for pilot lights that flicker and go out. Make sure the vent cover is properly fastened and that any openings in the furnace room are sealed to prevent drafts from leaving a chill over your winter night. Likewise, clogged or broken flame sensors can make a pilot light go out. When the flame sensor is dirty or damaged, we advise a timely cleaning and/or replacement.

Short cycling

Short cycling occurs when your HVAC system repeatedly turns on and off. Essentially, your heating system can’t make up its mind to work or take a break. This can result in a boost in your utility costs and in time create damage to your HVAC system.

Short cycling can also be the result of a defective thermostat. An HVAC technician from AC&R Services can help identify your home’s heating issues and repair them, many right on the spot. After all, they are the experts.

Uneven temperatures

Another common HVAC issue is uneven airflow in various rooms in your home. First, you should check for improper sealing of windows and doorways in those rooms. However, that may not always correct the problem. In these instances, you’ll need to have the ducting and vents looked at in the affected room(s). Look for debris or even furniture that is blocking the ventilation system in those areas.

If these checks don’t resolve the issue, give our team a call for a quick solution.

Heating system is blowing cold air

Nothing is more annoying than turning on the furnace and being met with a blast of cold air. First, check the blower to make sure nothing is blocking it. If it’s clear and the issue continues, you may have a faulty or broken heating element. This is a situation that calls for a professional technician from AC&R Services.

Carbon monoxide detector issues

True, a carbon monoxide (CO2) leak won’t block your furnace from working, but it’s a hazardous condition that must be addressed in any list of common HVAC problems.

As you probably are aware, CO is an odorless, colorless gas that can be lethal to humans. And while everyone should have one (or more) CO2 detectors inside their houses, these detectors are critical for homeowners who run their homes on gas.

If you have CO2 detectors in your home and they’re chirping (usually with a single chirp), this reveals the battery is low and needs replacement. This is an easy fix and in no way should ever be ignored.

If you hear it go off at any time with four beeps followed by a pause, this is a signal that CO2 has been identified inside your home and you need to leave straightaway. You should also contact emergency personnel immediately. Remember, CO2 is often called the “silent killer” because it is both colorless and odorless. Maintaining your CO2 detector can save your and your family’s lives.

Frozen pipes

When outside temperatures fall, the water inside your pipes can freeze, which can affect your heating system. Freezing temperatures can also result in emergency repairs, as the frozen water can expand and burst pipes or coils.

Freezing pipes are one of the more common HVAC winter issues. If you notice your HVAC system has stopped working or if you detect water leaks, these issues could both indicate frozen pipes.

If you suspect your pipes have frozen, shut off the water. You can then raise the temperature of the frozen pipes with towels, heating pads or even a hair dryer. Pipes only need between six to eight hours to freeze at temperature of 32 degrees externally or 20 degrees for your internal pipes.
